Youth Sailing 2012 - The future of PYC!

The Perry Yacht Club Youth Sailing program is open to the children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews of PYC members. As we have done for several years, we will teach classes based primarily on sailing competency rather than age.

Our first class will be devoted to evaluating the sailing skills of each child for proper class placement. It will be a morning to greet old friends and introduce new ones. As in years past we will separate kids into three levels using the ASA youth certification process to judge proficiencies. These levels include:

Novice -- No previous sailing experience.
Intermediate -- Able to sail the Sunfish solo comfortably.
Advanced --Able to sail and crew a multi-crew sailing vessel.

Our first meeting is dedicated to land-based teaching.  This year the "Knot a Pizza Party" will kick-off Junior Sailing program on June 2.  Regular classes will be on Saturdays: June 9, 16, 23 and 30.  Classes begin promptly at 9 A.M. and end at noon.

The cost of the class is $40 per student.  We will have limited space in the class, filled on a first come first served basis, when payment is received.  Two Youth Regattas are scheduled.  The Child/Parent Regatta will be held June 30 and the Bill Sander’s Memorial Regatta and Family Picnic on July 7.

Ricardo Oben will offer Catamaran lessons to "graduates" of Jr. Sailing. If you have a teen who liked to go fast and get wet please let me know and we will get them in the program. The Youth Sailing program is a great way to involve our kids and give them hands on experience at sailing. It's also a great way to have fun and meet other kids in the Club!

Youth Sailing Optis at PYC

The youth sailing program is a great way to involve our kids and give them hands on experience at sailing. It’s also a great way to have fun and meet other kids in the club! For the program to continue to be successful, we need volunteers to help in many ways. We always need instructors and helping hands on our four Saturdays, and we particularly need parents to pitch in to help raise money and prepare for the annual Commodore’s Cup Regatta. Proceeds from the regatta directly benefit youth sailing through purchases of sailing or teaching equipment.

To the Parents of Junior Sailing kids: The 2012 annual Commodores Cup is held Labor Day weekend at Perry Yacht Club. Activities start Friday night and continue through to the awards on Sunday afternoon. The funds that are collected are put right back into Junior Sailing. This could mean upgrading the fleet we have for junior sailing, and/or teaching equipment. Planning usually starts in February and we can always use help, whether it is coming to monthly meetings in Lawrence, helping with decorating, registration, cleaning up, selling ads, getting sponsors or out on the water with the committee and marker boats. There are plenty of jobs for everyone. Please plan to help us out if you can. Any questions, notify Terri Tilford or Matt Gatewood.
