Great news for PYC members regarding the upcoming sailing season at Perry Lake!
We have been monitoring the lake water levels following wonderful rains over the past 60 days. Thankfully the lake has now risen to 888.7 feet above sea level and is within 3 feet of the Army Corps of Engineers’ definition of “pool” at 891.5 feet, which is the optimal level. The current level is consistent with lake levels during a typical winter season. With continued rain forecast throughout the Missouri and Mississippi river watersheds the likelihood of the Corps reducing water in the lake is small.
At our April board meeting we discussed the most appropriate time to invite members back to their slips. Based upon the historical guidance given by past PYC Boards and the Army Corps of Engineers, it was decided that a lake level of 890 feet would be appropriate. At this level members can safely utilize all features of their membership, including the ramp and slips, and fully enjoy the 2013 sailing season. Presently some members have started to return their boats to the harbor, as the current lake level is sufficient to support even some of our largest boats. We’d love to see all boats back in the harbor but we want to emphasize that the safety of all boats and passengers in our harbor is the responsibility of boat owners, regardless of the water level.
Please understand that all outstanding membership fees are due when the lake level reaches 890 feet, regardless of whether or not you have launched your boat. If you choose to put your boat back in the water or return to your slip prior to that time we request that you pay your outstanding membership fees immediately.
Please keep an eye on the lake level by clicking on this U.S. Army Corps of Engineers link and do a rain dance today. We will post updates as we get closer to the magic number and will let you know when we hit 890 feet.
In closing I’d like to say thanks for your continued support of our club and let it rain!

A note from our Treasurer: A great question was posed via e-mail by one of our members that warrants further clarification. In the event a member has paid their deposit but is unable to return to PYC (ie. remains at another marina) then their slip would continue to be held for next season with no further dues payment required. If the member is able to return to PYC then the remaining dues would be expected at that time of their return. If the member returns after July 1, then their dues would be subject to the pro-rated schedule that was previously communicated (January 18th article).

The PYC Board of Governors is comprised of 14 positions. Each year we elect Flag Officers (Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, Treasurer, and Secretary) for a one-year term. The remaining officers are elected for two-year terms and their terms are staggered so that half of the group is elected during odd years and the other half is elected during even years. The following is the slate of officers nominated for 2013. Those listed with an asterisk (*) are up for election this year.
I hope you will be attending the Fall Membership Meeting this Saturday (October 27) at PYC, where we’ll vote for this new slate of officers.
*Commodore – Mij Frierson
*Vice Commodore – Ed Hockenberg
*Rear Commodore – Pat Allen
Past Commodore – Mij Frierson
*Treasurer – Rich Wells
*Secretary – Terri Tilford
Dock Master – Lee Cline
*Harbor master – TBD
Buildings/Grounds – Ricardo Oben/Chris Ross
*Assistant Treasurer – Doug McCall
Communication Director – Bruce Liese
*Yearbook Editor – Bill Buckheit

*Social Chair – Kelly Switzer
Please note that one position is still open (TBD), Harbor Master. If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else for this position please contact Mij Frierson or plan to make your nomination at the Fall Meeting.
Another Year is almost in the books
Well, it has been a challenging year. Lots of sailing early on then no rain and no water curtailed most of the late year sailing activity. Many have already pulled their boats or moved them to other marina’s while we pray for rain and more water in our harbor.
There are still some important club activities in the coming months. Our annual BBQ night is this coming weekend, please join us for some great eats. The last weekend of this month is club closing, come out and help us put the club to bed for the winter. Coming up next month is the annual year end party, join us for an evening of great food and dancing with our sailing friends.
Are you interested in giving back to the club? We are still looking for volunteers to be members of the Board of Governors, please call me or email if you are interested.
Looking forward to seeing you at a club event soon,
Mij Frierson

The beginning of June is upon us and it seems like we just opened the club. Time is flying by.
This weekend we had our annual Memorial Day weekend bash and I’m pretty sure everyone there had a great time. In typical Kansas fashion the wind blew hard and I saw lots of boats brave the high winds and heavy waves. Lots of great food and an evening of good music made for a terrific end to the weekend.
Our next social event is this weekend: The Annual New Member Pot Luck. Come on out and help us celebrate with our new members. The club will be supplying hamburgers, hot dogs – and either chicken or turkey brats for those that would prefer something besides red meat. Bring a side dish and join the fun.
Also coming soon (this month!) will be the Luekemia Cup Regatta, over the weekend of June 15th. There is still time to register if you would like to race or just come on out to watch the action from the shore.
Meet our new Buildings and Grounds Co-Directors, Ricardo Oben and Chris Ross
On a board-related matter, it was with a sad heart that I accepted Penny Morgan’s resignation from the board. Penny has been a great help on the board for several years but unfortunately other projects are consuming her time so she has decided that it’s time to pass the baton.
The board held a meeting at the club on Sunday to discuss her replacement. Chris Ross and Ricardo Oben have accepted the position of Director Buildings and Grounds. The board unanimously accepted them as new board members.

Wow, are you like me and wondering where April went? Though we’re just getting started it seems like this year is already zooming by. Boats are starting to fill slips in the marina and the noise of boat work can be heard from the storage yard.
This year promises to be a busy one again at PYC. Join us this weekend for the annual Cinco De Mayo party. It is a perennial favorite. Keep up to date on other upcoming events with our on-line calendar. A busy race schedule is about to get under way and new this year will be the Leukemia Cup Regatta in June.
Feel like doing a little volunteer work? Planning for the Commodore’s Cup has begun and additional help is always welcome. And of course all members are invited to join us on the second Thursday of each month for our monthly Board Meeting at Kansas City Sailing.
Most of all, come on out to PYC and enjoy our little jewel on the lake. Sailing time has arrived. I look forward to seeing you at the club.

I was glad to see all who could make it to the Winter Membership meeting. We had an excellent turnout. The biggest topics for discussion were the breakwater and this year’s budget.
John Anderson gave a very good report for the Long Range Planning Committe on the options for a new breakwater. Four club members (John Anderson, Gary Templeton, Ricardo Oben and I) had traveled to an Arkansas marina that was using three different types of breakwaters – where we could see them in action. We are waiting on some additional engineering data before we make a decision to take to the board and the membership next fall.
The new budget was passed with no changes.
Now we get to look forward to the club opening April 14th and the start of another great sailing season at PYC. Please join us for the club opening where we open up everything after the winter shut down and clean away any issues created by winter weather. Take a look at the Club’s social calendar and sign up to host one of our great parties.
We look forward to seeing you at the club.

The New Years festivities have come and gone. I hope your holidays were safe and fun. Winter has been kind to us so far. As I write this I am listening to a thunder storm in the middle of January, not our usual snow storm.
As we move into 2012 there are many things to keep in mind for the upcoming sailing season. By now you should have received your membership packet. Please be sure to send in your application with either the deposit or the full amount of your 2012 dues. If you haven’t received your packet or you have membership questions please contact our Assistant Treasurer, Doug McCall, who will be happy to help you out (with the application, that is).
The annual winter membership meeting is quickly approaching. It will take place on Saturday, March 3 from noon to 3:00 p.m. at Shawnee Civic Center (the same location as last year). As always we’ll share in a potluck meal at noon so please be sure to bring your favorite covered dish to share. PYC will provide the beverages. The actual membership meeting starts at 1:00 p.m. I hope to see you there.
Before you know it Spring will be here and it will be time for club opening (mark your calendar for Saturday, April 14). That’s when the fun begins! In the meantime, if you have a boat in the water be sure to go out to the club and check on it occasionally. Even in a mild winter you never know what the wind and waves will do to the dock lines securing your boat.
I look forward to seeing you at the membership meeting on March 3, at the club on April 14, and then (not soon enough) on the water this season.
